Refund Check

Okay, I know I'm not the only one sitting with a refund check who's not sure what to do with it. My first thought is to go on a vaca but I really gotta think about this. Whatever it is - clothes, vacation, etc. - I want to make sure its an investment. Years ago, I blew it off. I went to dinner, got a table at a club and less than 24 hours after getting my check, it was gone. I had nothing to show for it! I have a couple options here, and all of them are different so I’m not too sure which way to go.

The obvious first choice is to save it. Not to touch the check, pretend I never got it, and put it in my savings account. This idea is pretty simple; I don’t need to explain why it’s a plus.

Second choice is to pay off some of my credit card debt. My check isn’t big enough to pay off everything but it will make a dent, making my minimum payment lower. But the real issue here would be discipline. After getting my minimum lower, the only way paying some of my debt off would be beneficial is if I continue paying the same monthly amount I am paying now. Otherwise, I don't make much of an impact on my debt reduction. Paying the minimum, even if my payments become lower, only wastes money because of interest rates. Overall, paying off debt can never be a bad choice but the hard thing is that even though I am making a difference in my finances, it’s not easy to see that difference. And I am not physically gaining anything from it. So again, I won’t necessarily have something to show for it…but it will put me in a better place for the future.

And the last choice is to buy clothes. Now, hear me out before you assume it’s a bad investment. I am an entertainer. My job is to look good and to stay ahead of what's now. I’m not talking about running through my favorite clothing store and just grabbing stuff. I’m talking about seriously taking into account what would enhance my style and cop clothes that will last awhile. Taking my refund check and actually investing in some designer clothes is really making an investment in my career. Not only that, looking good enhances your confidence, and confidence will affect my performance.

So, I’m on the fence with what I should do, and I’m sure you can guess what I’m leaning towards. First, I have to recognize that getting to decide what I want to do with my refund check is a blessing. There are so many people out there without jobs or with homes in danger of being foreclosed on. I’m sure they are wishing they had a refund check and had the luxury to decide what to do with it.

Tax Refund

All of the ideas are good, as they all pertain to you reinvesting in yourself. However with you being in the entertainment field you are considered self employed as well. My suggestion is to take some of the refund and start yourself a Roth IRA account, they work something like a 401K plan that you control, not the bank, It has been proven that in some cases, retirement came early and the income came from the IRA. Now you have the power to invest what you want ,how you want and get good tax refunds all at the same time. Most people do the the samething with their refund checks,we get the money and go and spend it on the things we've wanted to get for awhile. Now you are on the fence about what to do. It's called S.L. & S.L. (SPEND A LITTLE & SAVE ALITTLE).
